About

The Nikon L35AF, is Nikon’s first compact camera with autofocus, was introduced in 1983, marking Nikon’s entry into the point-and-shoot market that had already been established by their competitors. This model, which became the inaugural release in Nikon’s L series, quickly gained popularity due to its robust design and impressive specifications, earning it a cult classic status among collectors.

Known as ‘Pikaichi’ (“top notch”) in Japan, featured a 35mm f/2.8 lens designed by Koichi Wakamiya as an update to the Sonnar formula. With its autofocus capability, the camera could focus from 0.8 meters to infinity. The lens was composed of five elements arranged in four groups, and it had a 46mm filter thread.

Operating in fully automatic mode, the L35AF offered a versatile exposure range. When using ASA/ISO 100 film, the camera had a range of EV 6 (f/2.8 at 1/8 sec.) to EV 17 (f/17.5 at 1/430 sec.). This allowed for reliable performance in various lighting conditions. The camera’s compatibility with a wide film sensitivity range, from 50 to 1000 ASA/ISO, further added to its flexibility.

One notable feature of the L35AF was its integral flash, which provided additional convenience for low-light situations. The flash system automatically adjusted the output based on the camera’s metering, ensuring proper exposure. The L35AF’s flash sync speed was 1/250 sec., enabling effective synchronization with the camera’s shutter.

The camera itself boasted a sturdy and durable design, making it suitable for everyday use. Its compact size and lightweight construction made it a portable option for photographers on the go. The L35AF’s reliability and ease of use contributed to its widespread appeal and long-lasting popularity among enthusiasts.

This Nikon is highly valued in the market and is often considered expensive for several reasons. Firstly, its cult status and popularity among collectors have significantly increased its demand and, consequently, its price. Furthermore, the camera’s robust build quality, timeless design, and reliable performance contribute to its high value.

Nikon’s reputation as a reputable camera manufacturer also adds to the premium price of the L35AF. Additionally, the scarcity of well-preserved units, especially those in excellent working condition, further drives up the price of this sought-after camera.
