About

The Nikon FM2 is an iconic and highly regarded semi-professional 35mm SLR camera with interchangeable lenses. Manufactured by Nippon Kogaku K.K. (now Nikon Corporation) in Japan, it was produced from 1982 to 2001. The FM2 was designed as a successor to the popular Nikon FM and incorporated significant improvements and advancements.

One notable feature of the FM2 is its exceptional shutter mechanism. It originally employed a robust Nikon-designed, metal-bladed, bearing-mounted, vertical-travel focal plane shutter. This innovative design offered a remarkable speed range from 1 to 1/4000th second, allowing photographers to capture fast-moving subjects or freeze motion with precision. Additionally, the FM2 boasted a flash X-sync speed of 1/250th second, enabling seamless integration with external lighting equipment.

An impressive aspect of the FM2 is its ability to function without battery power. Unlike many other cameras of its time, the FM2’s mechanical shutter and basic exposure control system operated even without batteries. This feature ensured photographers could continue shooting in situations where battery power was unavailable or depleted, highlighting the camera’s reliability and versatility.

In terms of dimensions, the FM2 measured 90mm in height, 142mm in width, and 60mm in depth, making it a compact and portable camera. Despite its compact size, the FM2 maintained a sturdy construction, allowing it to withstand rigorous use in various shooting conditions. It weighed approximately 540g, ensuring a comfortable and balanced feel in hand.

The FM2 was available in two color variations: black with chrome trim and an all-black model, catering to different aesthetic preferences of photographers. Both variations featured a sleek and timeless design, embodying Nikon’s commitment to producing cameras that were not only functional but also visually appealing.

Renowned for its reliability and durability, the FM2 built upon the reputation established by its predecessor, the FM. Its robust construction, reliable performance, and exceptional image quality made it a favorite among professional photographers and enthusiasts alike. The camera’s popularity extended beyond its production period, and it continues to be highly sought after by collectors and film photography enthusiasts worldwide.

The Nikon FM2’s compatibility with a wide range of Nikon F-mount lenses further contributed to its fame. Photographers had access to an extensive selection of lenses, including renowned options like the Nikkor AI-S series, offering various focal lengths, apertures, and specialized lenses for different photographic needs. This versatility allowed photographers to explore their creativity and achieve their desired artistic vision.
